Painted Female Figure with Baby in Arm

Tang Dynasty

9 centimeters high

Unearthed from Chang'an District, Xi'an City in 1952

The female figure is plump, and her hands embraced a cute baby on the right shoulder. She may be the maid or wet nurse in the home of the grave owner, whose duty is probably to look after the children.

The appearance of this kind of pottery figurines shows that the life archetypal figures which are the basis of the clay figures play an important role in the home of the tomb owners. At the same time, these life-rich sculptures also greatly enhance the charm of the pottery figurines sculptural art in the Tang Dynasty.
