Tang Dynasty

Unearthed from the southern suburbs of Xi'an City in 1970

Wine cup in oval shape with ears is known as yushang and had been in use in China for a long time before the Tang Dynasty. Such kind of wine cup is recorded to be used on important occasions like birthday celebrations, traditional festivals and royal banquets. These two almost identical silver wine cups are found from Hejiacun Hoard. Both are richly decorated with gilded carved patterns of trailing grass, flowers and paired birds, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between couples.
