Painted Hercules Figure on Horseback

Tang Dynasty

30 centimeters high

Unearthed from the tomb of Princess Yongtai, Qianxian County, Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province in 1960

The painted pottery figure of a Western man on horseback with naked upper body provides a vivid portrayal of a horse-riding guard who might be one of the Sogdian from Central Asia serving as bodyguards or imperial soldiers.
